Which session should I be attending?
There is a list of all our sessions under Swimming:Training Scedule. Training times and a copy of our squad sessions are available here. If in any doubt speak to your coach and you must check with your coach and the coach of the other session before changing.
How do I join Menzieshill Whitehall Swimming and Waterpolo Club?
Before we offer you a place we will need to assess you. Assessments take place regularly on a Saturday or a Sunday. In the first instance contact Susan our club secretary (firstname.lastname@example.org) to find out when the next assessment is. Depending on your ability we will offer you training sessions or advise of waiting lists.
What are the costs involved?
In addition to our yearly membership fee (including affiliation to Scottish swimming) - each session costs £3.00/£5.00 for a 2hr session.
We have two categories – ‘Learn to Swim’ and ‘Competitive Swimmer’.
Membership is due for renewal in March 2013. From September yearly memberships fees are halved for those joining.
How do I start swimming competitively?
The club has two teams in the Midland District Leagues. There are three divisions in the leagues each containing 5 teams – who meet five times a year (see league positions for more info).
In addition the club regularly attends meets both locally and nationally to cater for all categories of competitive swimming.
When your coach thinks you are ready they will offer you a swim in either a league gala or an individual meet.
In some age groups competition is very fierce as we have a large number of excellent swimmers. If you are chosen to swim in the league teams you will be expected to attend all five galas.
Where do I get some club kit?
We have a wide range of kit available at affordable prices (see Other: Club Kit). Please speak to Amanda at one of the training sessions or whoever is collecting the session money.
What should I have in my kit bag?
You will see many swimmers have a mesh kit bag – we recommend fins, paddles and a pull buoy for swimmers in our potential and competitive squads. Fins should be short swimming fins (long ones or dual ones are not suitable). Paddles come in many different forms and sizes and should match your hand size. If in doubt ask your coach for guidance.
How do I contact the committee?
All correspondence should go through the club secretary (email@example.com)
Do I need a water bottle?
Yes absolutely. For every hour of training you should be consuming a litre of water. If you prefer to have a weak diluting juice this is ok – fizzy drinks are not permitted on pool side and it is not necessary to have energy drinks.
What should I bring to a gala?
In your kit bag you should have a swimming costume (preferably a club one), a cap (again preferably a club one) and a pair of goggles. Long hair should be tied back. You will also need a towel and a t-shirt (preferably red) to wear on pool side. In addition many of our swimmers also have shorts and/or trackie bottoms and pool shoes.
You should bring plenty to drink (juice or water, no fizzy drinks). Also snacks such as fruit, dried fruit, pancakes.
For all day meets you will also need a packed lunch (please note lunches are unsupervised and responsibility for the swimmer lies with the parent/carer).
Please keep sweets to a minimum and ensure you have eaten at least an hour before the event.
It is a good idea to bring all your stuff onto pool side – please do not leave anything in the changing rooms.
Where can I find out more about the club and how it all works?
Look on these web pages. We also have a welcome pack and log book which can be downloaded. Also speak to other parents on poolside –we are a friendly club and welcome your views and input.
How can I help the club as a Volunteer?
We constantly need more volunteers. All of our coaches and committee members are volunteers. The more coaches we have the more training sessions we can provide. Many of our sessions are full but we cannot provide more sessions as we do not have the coaches to cover these sessions.
If you are interested in coaching please speak to our Head Coach or one of the other coaching team.
At every gala we attend we need to provide time keepers and judges. Currently we require more time keepers and recorders and are desperately short of judges. Full training will be provided. We also need general helpers (to man the door, sell programmes, act as runners and marshalls).
We also require help/support with the clubs fundraising events - Can you help give out scratch cards, collect money, organise bag-pack rotas, cook for BBQ, cook for cake and candy stalls?
Please consider volunteering as we really need you!
